This chapter and the next critically consider the figure of Gyōnen himself, as this is the first study of this Buddhist master outside Japan. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the life and career of Gyōnen based on the earliest known biographical material, most of which was collated in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. An outline is given of the available biographical sources, and this is followed by a biographical summary.
