Placing the Poor

(p.3) Introduction
The Hungry are Dying

Susan R. Holman

Oxford University Press

The introduction locates this study of fourth‐century texts about poverty relief against the general background of scholarship in place of the poor in religious history. New Testament scholars often reflect a range of views, and social economists and historians provide yet other perspectives, but most of these studies are primarily concerned with the activity of charity or philanthropy. In contrast, this study focuses on the poor themselves, the involuntary poor and the construct of their bodies, limiting the discussion to those called poor in the texts. This discussion and these poor are here placed within modern scholarship on civic, body, gift, and economic imagery, while pursuing a deeper understanding of theological implications often overlooked in other studies.

Keywords:   body, Cappadocia, charity, involuntary poor, philanthropy, poor, poverty, relief, theology
