The Explanatory Connection

The Explanatory Connection

(p.145) 7 The Explanatory Connection
The Book of Evidence

Peter Achinstein (Contributor Webpage)

Although necessary for evidence, a probability of the hypothesis on the putative evidence greater than half is not sufficient. What is required, it is argued, is that there be a probability greater than half that there is an explanatory connection between the hypothesis and the evidence, given the evidence. The concept of an ”explanatory connection” is defined, and it is shown how this condition yields a good reason to believe and avoids counterexamples against standard probability views of evidence.
