This chapter examines the ways in which chief information officers (CIOs) influence peer executives within an organization regarding strategic IT objectives and plans. It presents the results of a field study based on in-depth interviews with 14 CIOs and their executive peers. CIOs today are involved in shaping and supporting business strategy, and exerting their influence in more than just IT technical projects. The CIO who exercises influence well can be more effective in future IT strategy planning and implementation, and business strategy planning efforts.
