This chapter presents the trinitarian theology that serves as the overarching framework for Congar’s theology of the Holy Spirit. Congar’s approach is notable for his emphasis on the inseparability and nonduality of the missions of the Word and the Spirit and his advocacy of a pneumatological Christology. This shapes his approach to the debated issues of the Filioque and the meaning of the traditional affirmation of the personhood of the Holy Spirit.
