Surveys the broad process of economic and social change in Palanpur between 1957 and 1993. Population growth, occupational diversification, and technological change are identified as key forces of change in the village economy. The evolution of asset ownership is studied. Changes in income levels and their distribution are examined. Access to and provision of public services is analysed. The persistence of social inequalities against the backdrop of economic change is highlighted.
