Analyses democratic development in Africa, Latin America, and India, from the point of view of socioeconomic and institutional conditions. In this comparison, India comes out as a special case. Despite unfavourable socio‐economic conditions, democratic development has been relatively successful. The key is favourable institutional conditions.
