This chapter presents the theoretical background for the four case studies discussed in chapters fifteen to eighteen, which focus on the success stories of high-tech local systems: the media industry in Cologne, Germany; the biotech sector in Oxford, UK; software activities in Pisa, Italy; and the ICT sector in Grenoble, France. It argues that high-tech systems may be viewed as a distinct type of local production systems.
