The Early Years

(p.1) 1 The Early Years

Jerome Murphy-O'Connor

Oxford University Press

Aramaic-speaking parents brought Paul to Tarsus from Galilee as prisoners-of-war sold as slaves. Excellent education in rhetoric, and a smattering of Stoicism. As a Pharisee, he saw that proclamation of Jesus as the Messiah implied repudiation of the Law. It was an either-or situation, not the both-and situation that Jewish Christians wanted. Hence, his persecution of Christians.
