This chapter begins with a brief description of the three facets of the European economic system: the single market and complementary microeconomic policies, macroeconomic policies in the monetary union, and the EU budget. An overview of the chapters included in this volume is then presented. These cover European Union policies, growth, stability, cohesion, economic trade-offs, economic governance, sustainability, enlargement, and policy recommendations.
