Is the European model sustainable?
The sustainability of the European model has become more uncertain. Low growth rates and high unemployment rates have strained public finances, which is incompatible with the fiscal rectitude required by a growing Trends in demography, technology, and globalisation; and the inability to establish a new social contract have prevented Europe from preserving the unprecedented growth achieved during the trente glorieuses — the thirty years between 1945 and 1975. These trends are expected to increase the demands for social protection, further threatening the sustainability of the European model.
