Aspects of a Friendship

(p.39) 3 Aspects of a Friendship
Nietzsche and Rée

Robin Small (Contributor Webpage)

Oxford University Press

Discusses aspects of the personalities of Rée and Nietzsche arising from their different backgrounds and experiences. We have information from many sources about Nietzsche, but Rée’s character remains largely hidden. Even so, we can see how they complemented each other in many ways. Rée’s relation to his Jewish background is a hidden theme in his life and work. A section explores the significance of this aspect and its influence on Nietzsche’s changing attitudes towards the so-called ‘Jewish question’, and his rejection of contemporary anti-Semitism. Finally, the question of Nietzsche’s influence on Rée is discussed.
