That appetite can form beliefs is presupposed in the Republic and denied in the Timaeus. This chapter explains this development in Plato’s psychological theory in terms of new thoughts about what is involved in forming beliefs, rather than in terms of substantial changes in Plato’s conception of appetite. It is argued that the new thoughts in question are on display at Theaetetus 184-6.
