This essay explores the relationship that has evolved across my career between musicology and the accompanist’s practice of performing and comprehending Schubert’s songs. It traces the path my own engagement with Schubert’s Lieder has taken, coordinated with the development of Schubert scholarship in this time, from the early impact of Eusebius Mandyczewski and later Otto Erich Deutsch, to the transformative work of Walter Dürr and the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe. I evaluate the ways in which Dürr’s work in particular has changed the way I approach Schubert’s music, pay tribute to the transformation of the Schubertian landscape that the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe has engineered, and offer reflections on the common causes that bind performers and Schubert scholars together.
