Using PISA 2006 data, this chapter examines the science performance of fifteen-year-old children of immigrant parents, originating from thirty-five countries and living in sixteen OECD destination countries. While previous research focused on the influence of individual-level characteristics, this chapter’s focus is on the impact of macro-level characteristics on student achievement, such as the educational, political, economic, and religious features of countries of origin and destination, using a cross-classified multi-level approach. The results show that at the destination level, teacher shortages have a negative effect on science performance, while a longer history of migration has a positive one. Also, comprehensive educational systems have a positive effect on immigrant children’s educational performance, but only for higher-income class children. At the origin level, the compulsory education period positively impacts science performance. Moreover, immigrants from countries with Eastern religious affiliations perform better than immigrants from Christian countries and immigrants from Islamic countries.
