Yearning for a Far-Off Country

Yearning for a Far-Off Country

(p.110) 7 Yearning for a Far-Off Country
C. S. Lewis and His Circle

Malcolm Guite

Oxford University Press

This chapter engages with Lewis’s sermon ‘The Weight of Glory’ and considers how the theme of longing, of yearning for a far-off country, which it adumbrates, pervades all of Lewis’s work. It goes on to examine the way his whole approach overcomes a false ‘subject-object’ divide imposed by modernism, and indeed postmodernism, but seeks instead a way of knowing that integrates reason and imagination, analytical and affective ways of knowing. It concludes by showing that the deep longing aroused by works of true imagination re-enchants, rather than disenchants, the ‘ordinary’ world of the reader, and that the yearning which arises from this experience may be a clue to the nature of reality itself.
