(p.1) Introduction A World War Condensed
The "Russian" Civil Wars, 1916—1926

Jonathan D. Smele

Oxford University Press

The Introduction places the “Russian” Civil Wars within the wider context of the First World War (particularly as it was played out on the Eastern Front) and the history of the multi-national Russian Empire over the previous century. It examines the complicated and sizable historiography of its subject and explains the unusual chronology of the book's focus, as well as imparting the terrible rates of mortality that the wars inflicted, making comparisons with other, similar struggles (such as the Spanish Civil War). Above all, it seeks to explain the complexity and geographical scope of the inter-related but diverse wars with which the book deals.

Keywords:   historiography, chronology, mortality, Russian Empire, First World War, Eastern Front
