(p.305) Conclusions
Trading Worlds

Magnus Marsden

Oxford University Press

The conclusion explores the implications of the material presented in the book in relationship to three themes: the significance of the trading activities of Afghans to Central Asia’s recent past and to understanding the specific nature of the region’s “globalisation”; the insights that the everyday lives of Afghan traders offer into understanding the nature of collective forms of identity, belonging, and citizenship in world regions characterised by their mobility, political instability, heterogeneity, and fluidity; and trade’s status not solely as an economic strategy that is deployed at times of necessity, but also as a creative and social field of thought and action that offers unique insights for anthropologists seeking to understand the overlapping domains of morality, politics, economy, and religion.
