The Levant

The Levant

(p.108) 10 The Levant
The Bible Cause

John Fea

Oxford University Press

This chapter explores the American Bible Society’s agency in the Levant, a region that encompassed the Ottoman Empire and the surrounding areas in the Middle East. The focus is on the establishment of an ABS presence in this region, with particular emphasis on the work surrounding the Constantinople Bible House. The chapter also chronicles the tensions in the region between the ABS and the British and Foreign Bible Society. Both societies had agents in the Levant and regularly competed for converts. Finally, this chapter argues that the ABS experience in the Levant moved the organization from a “ministry” or “benevolent society” to a business.
