The Bible Cause

John Fea

This chapter explores the American Bible Society’s role in Mexico in the years prior to the Mexican Revolution. It examines the role of Protestant colporteurs bringing the Bible into Catholic villages and the persecution that they suffered. The story of the ABS in Mexico is grounded in the history of the Mexican nation at the turn of the twentieth century and concentrates on ways in which this benevolent organization continued its work in the midst of constant political revolution. It also examines the agency of Hiram and Frances Hamilton, ABS agents who were influential in establishing the ABS presence in the region.
