The War to End All Wars

The War to End All Wars

(p.153) 14 The War to End All Wars
The Bible Cause

John Fea

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the role of the American Bible Society (ABS) during World War I. It begins with the ABS involvement in Mexico and the attempts to distribute Bibles to the army of John Pershing as he chased Pancho Villa through the Mexican countryside. It then explores the Bible distribution efforts of the ABS among soldiers in Europe during the war. During the War the ABS published special khaki-covered Bibles for soldiers, worked closely in its distribution efforts with the YMCA, and connected its pursuit of a Christian civilization at home with the cause of the war taking place in Europe.
