Alla Osipenko was born in 1932, fifteen years after the Russian Revolution, but she was raised almost in a cocoon of pre-Revolutionary decorum and protocol. Her family was aristocratic on both her mother’s and her father’s sides. Her mother Nina Borovikovskaya was a descendant of a famous eighteenth-century portraitist. Her father Evgeni Borovikovsky worked as a police detective but was jailed in 1937 for drunken and disorderly behavior, after which her mother immediately divorced him—marriage to a convict could spell ruin in Soviet society. This chapter chronicles her mother’s family and how it coped with the depredations of the Bolsheviks. It also characterizes Osipenko’s relationship with her mother, her grandmother, and her great-aunt with whom she grew up.
