At sixteen, Osipenko entered the senior ballet class taught by Agrippina Vaganova, who dominated ballet teaching during the Soviet period. This chapter reviews Vaganova’s history in the Imperial and Soviet ballet, her personality and her teaching methods. It includes comments from famous pupils Ninel Kurgapkina and Irina Kolpakova. This chapter broaches an issue that will recur throughout the book: how Osipenko’s dancing was at odds with the doctrine of Socialist realism that had been imposed as official artistic policy in 1934.
