(p.54) Chapter 3 Uncovering Argument Licensing
Argument Licensing and Agreement

Claire Halpert

Oxford University Press

This chapter reviews proposals that Bantu languages lack case-licensing and argues in favor of a different conclusion for Zulu: certain nominals must receive case-licensing in vP-internal positions. In particular, the chapter argues that augmentless nominals in Zulu are licensed either by a Licenser head that is between T(ense) and vP or by applicative/causative in direct object position. The chapter demonstrates that this case-based account for augmentless nominals has better empirical coverage than other approaches distribution of the augment. It further compares the augment distribution in Zulu to augment patterns in other Bantu languages, discussing common syntactic patterns that emerge in Kinande, Luganda, and Xhosa.
