This chapter studies the revival of jiaohua (education-transformation) projects and Confucian education from the perspective of their institutionalization. It analyzes different types of strategies. Whereas some projects are carried out in the framework of existing educative institutions (such as universities), others are launched in completely different contexts. Sometimes they reflect a strong desire for autonomy that materializes in the reemergence and reinvention of traditional structures, such as sishu (traditional schools) or shuyuan (academies). But Confucianism-inspired education may also develop in nonstrictly educational premises such as nongovernmental organizations, companies, and official institutions. This chapter provides a general mapping of the situation and paves the way for later analyses.
