“The Varieties of Religious Experience”
“The Varieties of Religious Experience”
Chapter 4 introduces the second part of the book, focusing on the Chinese notion of anshen liming that points both to the search for inner peace and the concern for a destiny, whether personal or collective. The chapter itself starts with the story of the “conversion” to Confucianism of a businesswoman and compares it with other cases to give some insight into “the varieties of religious experiences” leading today to Confucianism. The chapter emphasizes both the role of Buddhism and the role of the master in this process. The reactivation of master-disciple links constitutes one of the remarkable aspects of the current Confucian revival.
