This chapter reports on the reflections of a chemistry professor at the University of California Berkeley and a chemistry teacher at the California College Preparatory Academy (CAL Prep) about their long-standing collaboration to improve the teaching of chemistry in high school and in gateway courses at the university—through the use of a student-centered pedagogy that deeply engages diverse students in high-level thinking skills. The chapter begins with a description of the process of developing the Living By Chemistry curriculum. It then discusses the mutual benefits resulting from vertical teaming in teaching science, with team members including teachers, district coaches, graduate students, and university faculty. Finally, the chapter describes the implementation of the curriculum at CAL Prep, highlighting challenges and successes as well as the need for continual assessment and refinement of both curriculum and pedagogy in the context of urban classrooms.
