The chapter examines five terrorist cells in 2005–8 representing a pattern where jihadi terrorism in Europe was becoming increasingly diversified and involving more nationalities, combining people born and bred in the region with immigrants. These cases also demonstrate how al-Qaida’s regional branches began taking an interest in Europe, and how the motivational landscape was widening. In addition to invasions, counter-terrorism measures and perceived insults against Islam such as the Prophet Muhammad cartoons gained in significance as motives. The cases also illustrate that while jihadi plots had largely been confined to continental Europe and the UK, now the threat was also expanding north, affecting Scandinavia.
