The Empress and the Poet

The Empress and the Poet

(p.37) 2 The Empress and the Poet
Wandering Poets and Other Essays on Late Greek Literature and Philosophy

Alan Cameron

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses the career and works of the poet Cyrus of Panopolis and the empress Eudocia, wife of Theodosius II. Cyrus enjoyed great success at court in Constantinople, but was disgraced and sent to be a bishop at Cotyaeum in Phrygia. On his return to Constantinople he became close to St. Daniel the Stylite, although the accusation has repeatedly been made that Cyrus was in principle or practice a pagan. The chapter examines the remaining fragments of Cyrus’s poetry, specifically the poet’s contributions to the forms of panegyric and bucolic. It also discusses the poems of Eudocia, metrical paraphrases of Christian writings, hagiography, and the date of the poet Nonnus.
