“We Are Not Europeans”
Ideology and Identity in Pretoria’s Golden Age
Chapter 1 outlines the political and intellectual terrains of Afrikaner rule in the 1960s and shows how they informed new understandings of the regime’s mission. It shows how and why different sectors of Afrikanerdom interpreted the corollaries of Hendrik Verwoerd’s separate development model for Afrikaner identity in divergent ways, creating the context for the unorthodox statecraft that followed. The chapter thus embeds the central narrative in socioeconomic, cultural, and intellectual flux within white South African society.
