(p.91) 11 Torture
The Purse and the Sword

Daniel Friedmann

Oxford University Press

This chapter discusses another Shin Bet scandal-this time on the torture and perjury committed by Shin Bet agents against Israel Defense Forces officer Izat Nafso. This occurred less than a year after the Bus 300 affair, from which Shin Bet had yet to recover. In response to the Nafso scandal, the cabinet voted to establish a national commission of inquiry to examine “the investigation methods and procedures of the [Shin Bet] on HTA [Hostile Terrorist Activity], and the giving of testimony in court in connection with these investigations.” Former Chief Justice Moshe Landau was chosen to head the commission, which was sharply critical of the Shin Bet’s conduct in the Nafso case. The Nafso and Bus 300 scandals, as well as the involvement of the Landau Commission, the Knesset, and the Supreme Court in these affairs, were telling of the failing of the legal system.
