Woman Suffrage at the High Tide of Anglo-American Reform

This chapter examines the role played by John Stuart Mill’s Subjection of Women in shaping attitudes toward woman suffrage, a cause he claimed in 1865 was becoming a “badge of advanced liberalism” on both sides of the Atlantic. Mill was a well-known presence on the American intellectual landscape, his every utterance greeted with attention and respect. Yet, this chapter argues, while his 1869 women’s rights manifesto earned a hearing in circles well outside the women’s rights movement, its very success led many reviewers to express anxiety over the rate and scope of change at a moment of dramatic Anglo-American reform.
