Colleges need to invest more heavily in the language of vocation by undertaking such reflection and discernment at an institutional level. While this will differ from individual forms of vocational discernment, it can still provide a useful alternative or supplement to the standard language of institutional direction in higher education (such as mission, vision, and goals). Certain transformations will be necessary in order for academic institutions to begin thinking of their future direction in vocational terms; these have certain parallels to the new stances that students need to adopt when they do this kind of work. The chapter concludes with some strategies for carrying out this work, along with some indications of how it might help the academic disciplines and applied fields develop more active practices of interdisciplinary conversation.
