This chapter applies the principles of phenomenology and hermeneutics as outlined by Paul Ricoeur and others to field research in ethnomusicology. It reconstructs fieldwork as fieldplay. It also reconsiders where in the world is the field. It argues that fieldwork always begins with preunderstandings that are modified during research not through objective observation but through conversations with people in the field and other fieldwork experiences. Its main points are illustrated with reference to the author’s experiences studying Bulgarian music.
