Time, Place, and Metaphor in Musical Experience and Ethnography
Time, Place, and Metaphor in Musical Experience and Ethnography
This chapter proposes a three-dimensional model for subject-centered musical ethnography, that is, for the study of individual musical experience. It also suggests that this model accounts for the act of fieldwork and the musical ethnographies that result from it. The chapter calls in the space of musical experience and ethnography. The three dimensions of the space are the time of musical experience, places of musical experience, and metaphors about the nature of music. The chapter argues that musical experience in the present can be explained by examining the path individuals have taken through this space. When different individuals in a culture find themselves at odds with each other, those differences, which the author calls experiential tension, can be explained by their different positions within the space and by their different trajectories through the space.
