Modeling Ethnomusicology

Oxford University Press

This chapter argues that ethnomusicology can be organized around a large and growing number of themes. It focuses on a set of relatively recent themes that have entered the field since the late 1990s. These are (1) music, war, and conflict; (2) music, forced migration, and minority studies; (3) music, disease, and healing; (4) music in particular tragedies; (5) music, violence, and poverty; and (6) music, climate change, and the environment. The chapter argues that such studies may affect method and the potential value of ethnomusicological research to those in other fields studying these problems, as well as show that music may be most effective in ameliorating problems when it is combined with other forms of social and cultural action. The chapter also argues that such studies may push the field beyond the study of music to the study of sound environments.
