Competitive Disadvantages and Downsides

Competitive Disadvantages and Downsides

(p.125) Chapter Six Competitive Disadvantages and Downsides
The Rise of Network Christianity

Brad Christerson

Oxford University Press

This chapter addresses the weaknesses of INC Christianity and its competitive disadvantages when compared with religious groups organized around traditional congregations and denominations. We identify four primary weaknesses: oversold beliefs regarding the supernatural, a lack of capacity to produce stable community life, a limited capacity for influencing long-term social change, and an increased likelihood of corruption and scandal. We conclude that these competitive disadvantages grow out of INC Christianity’s primary competitive strength: its network structure.
