The War Beat, Europe

The news blackout during the fighting in the Bulge was only the most eye-catching attempt by the military to keep an aspect of the war hidden. The role of black troops had long been masked, and now that manpower shortages were drawing more black soldiers into combat roles, the military continued to shroud race relations in secrecy. The air war jumped back on to the front pages following a clumsy briefing on the Dresden raid. For a short time, the military tried to restrict news of the first two crossings of the Rhine River, fearing a German counterattack, but soon word of these American victories seeped out, to the delight of Omar Bradley and Patton who had beaten the British across the last major defensive line before Berlin.
