This chapter discusses the epidemiology of dementia and the need for palliative care, followed by a description of common problems among patients with dementia and their caregivers. It argues that palliative care is an important alternative to conventional care in the terminal phase of dementia. It establishes that professional and family caregivers view palliative care as appropriate for the end-stages of dementia, and reviews related research on access to hospice for dementia patients as well as the findings of pilot studies on providing palliative care and hospice to this vulnerable population.
