(p.11) Chapter 1 Stroke
Palliative Care for Non-cancer Patients

Angie Rogers

Oxford University Press

This chapter indicates the likely number of people with stroke for whom palliative care is considered to be appropriate. It then considers the needs of two distinct groups: those whose strokes leave them heavily dependent and usually unconscious, whose prognosis is very poor and who are unlikely to leave the hospital setting (‘poor prognosis stroke’); and a less severely afflicted group whose strokes reduce their previous physical, psychological, and social functioning. Those in the second group are likely to remain dependent on others for most of their daily living activities and have higher mortality rates than their non-stroke counterparts, but are usually able to leave hospital. The chapter concludes with some suggestions for future research.
