This chapter provides a framework of models of organization for palliative care described in the literature. This framework serves as a basis for the evaluation of alternative models presented in the latter sections of this study. The framework of options presented in this chapter is not necessarily exhaustive; however, it provides comprehensive details of models of palliative care. The framework seeks not to pinpoint who owns or is responsible for a system; rather, it aims to show how the palliative care service is delivered. Among the palliative care models discussed herein are hospital approaches, institutional services for patients who are not in-patients, home-based services, and other services such as support groups.
