This chapter examines the nutritional aspects of cachexia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. It explains that pulmonary cachexia is a frequently occurring complication in patients with chronic respiratory disorders that contributes negatively to health status and quality of life. Tissue depletion is not only the result of a decreased dietary intake, but often of a complex metabolic process. Some of the importance factors that contribute to the resulting muscle depletion are systemic inflammation and a decreased mechanical and metabolic efficiency. Nutritional intervention should ideally include detection characterisation of patients based on measurements of body composition.
