This chapter examines upper airflow obstruction in dyspnoea. It explains that obstruction of the major airways causes severe distress and that in most cases it is better to attempt active palliation than to employ sedation and conservative measures as a routine. The chapter discusses some of the minimally invasive endobronchial techniques available for airflow obstruction, including stents, laser therapy, cryotherapy, diathermy, photodynamic therapy, and intraluminal brachytherapy.

Keywords:   airflow obstruction, dyspnoea, active palliation, sedation, endobronchial techniques, laser therapy, cryotherapy, diathermy, photodynamic therapy, intraluminal brachytherapy
