This chapter examines the physiology and pathophysiology of cough. It explains that cough is an essential variable reflex that protects the respiratory tract and which involves many muscle groups to produce a major expulsive effort. The chapter analyses the afferent limb of the cough reflex covering the laryngeal, tracheobronchial, and other sites from which the reflex may be elicited and discusses the role of neuropeptides as sensory neurotransmitters.

Keywords:   cough, variable reflex, respiratory tract, afferent limb, neuropeptides, sensory neurotransmitters
