This chapter examines the application of economic analysis in supportive care for patients with respiratory diseases. It discusses the notion and purpose of an economic evaluation and sets out the essential steps of carrying out the analysis in practice. The chapter explains that economic analyses attach equal importance to the expected benefits on the patients' health as to the costs of achieving them and clarifies that the basic tasks of an economic evaluation are to systematically identify, measure, and value all the costs and beneficial effects of alternative healthcare options.
