(p.13) Chapter 2 Globalization – a new agenda for health?
International Co-operation in Health

Kelley Lee

Oxford University Press

This chapter explores the challenges raised by globalization for health. It begins by describing a conceptual framework that defines globalization as a process of change affecting human societies across a range of spheres and along three dimensions — spatial, temporal, and cognitive. Each of these dimensions is examined in relation to some of the potential impacts on health. From this conceptual framework, an agenda is identified that addresses four key gaps — jurisdiction, participation, incentive, and knowledge. The first three are policy-oriented in their aims, processes, and outcomes, while the last concerns the strengthening of global health research.
