Aging Leaders and Other Aging Workers
Aging Leaders and Other Aging Workers
A comparison of older leaders and other older workers throughout the job spectrum is given in this chapter. It argues that prominent figures with great discretion over their work conditions may face particular occupational challenges late in their career that result from declining powers. The chapter also investigates the common properties of aging leaders as aging workers. This chapter aims to introduce the readers to the world of older workers, to provide an appreciation of what aging leaders may yet be able to contribute. The chapter aims to understand the trials of late career common to all workers, regardless of whether they are top-level executives or not. The myths that underlie biases against older workers, as well as the psychological and the organizational research about late-career workers, which challenges much of the conventional wisdom regarding the role of older workers in the firm are also considered.
