This chapter focuses on the general contrast between rationalistic and empiricistic philosophies of science, and certain specific issues that are usually associated with it. These include formalism versus informalism in theory construction and explanation, the distinction between observational and theoretical terms, the terminal meta-postulate as a logical limitation of certain empiricistic theories, and the role of operationism in contemporary research and theory.
