This chapter presents a history of the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, when famed lawyer Clarence Darrow defended John Thomas Scopes, a schoolteacher in Dayton, Tennessee, for teaching the theory of evolution. Leading the prosecution was Christian fundamentalist, William Jennings Bryan, whom Mencken had encountered as a reporter years before. The chapter focuses on Mencken's crucial role in the trial, and the positive and negative influence he exerted.
