Sara Haardt began to fill the void left by Mencken's mother. She became a comfortable presence who exacted less demands on him than any other woman in his life, and who, despite her physical ailments, refused to cast herself in the role of victim or martyr. In 1929, Sara was faced with a recurrence of tuberculosis, and doctors told Mencken that she had only three more years to live. Mencken vowed to marry Sara, and make these the happiest years of her life.
